Two Missouri Schools Receive Lowe's SkillsUSA Community Service Grant

Congratulations to Ranken Technical College and Macon Area Vocational and Technical School for being selected to receive a 2009 Lowe's SkillsUSA Community Service Grant. Ranken Technical College received $9,700 to help improve the neighborhood around the college by building area homes, and Macon AVTS received $10,000 to update and renovate a local family literacy center.

Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation selected 20 SkillsUSA chapters nationwide for innovative projects or program enhancements.  The grants, up to $10,000 each, address the country's growing skilled-worker shortage and "skills gap" by contributing to SkillsUSA® programs nationwide.

National Theme: Champions at Work

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving a quarter-million high school and college students and professional members who are enrolled in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations. It is organized into 13,000 chapters and 54 state and territorial associations (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands). More than 1,000 corporations, trade associations and labor unions actively support SkillsUSA on a national level through financial aid, in-kind contributions, and involvement of their people in SkillsUSA activities.

SkillsUSA's mission is to help its members become world-class workers and responsible American citizens. It complements technical skills training by providing quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities. Founded in 1965, SkillsUSA has developed nearly 8 million workers through active partnerships between employers and educators.

SkillsUSA Missouri

SkillsUSA Missouri is a state association of SkillsUSA Inc. SkillsUSA Missouri consists of nine districts with over 85 local chapters with more 10,000 members.

SkillsUSA Missouri is the CTSO for Industrial and Health Sciences Education. It is an applied method of learning where students practice skills and build self-confidence while helping their schools and communities. The SkillsUSA Professional Development Program is a curriculum which involves local industry and academics which can be used in day-trades, apprenticeship training, cooperative education, school-to-work, academic and special needs programs. Our program emphasizes high ethical standards, superior work skills, lifelong education and pride.

SkillsUSA activities foster the development of problem-solving ability and teamwork while building self-confidence and communication skills. These are qualities employers value and look for when hiring or promoting workers. The local program of work sets the pace for the SkillsUSA chapter.
