Family Focused Education

Family and consumer sciences instructors teaching in an approved Career Family and Consumer Sciences EdSeptember 9, 2008ols must have a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Certificate. For complete details see the FACS competencies in the Educator Certification Manual.

Family and consumer sciences instructors teaching in middle school or in non-career family and consumer sciences education programs in 9-12 comprehensive high schools may be certified in General Family and Consumer Sciences,* or Career Family and Consumer Sciences B-12.*

*Effective September 01, 2004, certification in middle school and high school career and non-career programs will require the “Career Family and Consumer Sciences/Family Resource Educator, Birth through Grade 12” certificate.

Occupational FACS Certification Requirements

Career Preparation Education

Occupational certification is required for instructors teaching in occupational family and consumer sciences secondary and postsecondary/adult programs—career preparation education. Secondary occupational teaching programs are most often found in career and technology centers although a few comprehensive high schools have occupational programs. The postsecondary/adult occupational family and consumer sciences programs are usually located in two and four year education institutions.
