STAR Reading Project
Pilot for STAR Reading Project in Full Gear
The pilot stage of the STudent Achievement in Reading (STAR) project is underway in Missouri AEL programs across the state. Pilot program participants include Columbia, Houston, Joplin, North Kansas City, Springfield, St. Charles, St. Joseph, and St. Louis. All pilot programs began operating STAR reading classes this summer.
The Star Reading program is an OVAE special project initiative created to assist states and local programs in making systemic and instructional changes required to improve reading achievement of intermediate-level adult learners. STAR provides teachers and administrators with innovative Web-based tools that translate reading research into practice and high quality training and technical assistance to build capacity for reading reform.
The Pilot phase is expected to end in December 2008, and full implementation of the project by all local programs will begin in February.
STAR program administrators conducted a tour of the classes this summer to observe and discuss progress with the participants. Leading the weeklong tour was Becki Lemke, National STAR Trainer assigned to Missouri for Technical Assistance. Also observing was Jamy Preul, director of the Missouri AEL Professional Development Center, and John Stains, DESE AEL state supervisor, who is overseeing the STAR Reading project.
