SERVICE OR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Adult Education & Literacy instruction is designed to teach persons 16 years of age or older to read and write English and to substantially raise their educational level. The purpose of the program is to expand the educational opportunities for adults and to establish programs that will enable all adults to acquire basic skills necessary to function in society and allow them to secure training that will enable them to become more employable, productive and responsible citizens as well as allowing them to continue their education to at least the level of completion of secondary school.
ELIGIBLE RECIPIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS:
Eligible students--adults 16 years of age or older not presently enrolled in school with less than a high school education or its equivalent and speakers of English as a second language.
FUNDING OR GRANTS AVAILABLE:
Grants are made to local educational agencies, not for profit community based organizations, and other eligible groups based on a competitive application process.
ACCESS PROCEDURES:
Application for funding is made after a community survey has been conducted to determine need in the area to be served. Application consists of a local educational plan and budget on forms supplied by the Director of Adult Education.
