Re: New Formula Simulations

Attached are simulations of a proposed new school-funding formula which were released last night (March 1) by the Joint Committee on Education. As you review these documents, it is important to remember that the principles underlying this proposal are quite different from those underlying the current formula; therefore, a comparison of the two will not always result in what one might expect. It is also important to remember that this is the first presentation of the projections resulting from the new concepts that are being considered as the framework for a new school-funding system. The political process may take this proposal in many directions.

I applaud the Joint Committee on Education for its strong efforts to craft a formula that can be debated within the legislature and the state. The new proposal is a significant step toward creating a new formula that addresses many of the concerns that have been expressed about the current one.
