Missouri Schools Encouraged to Participate in Earthquake Drill

The “Great Central U.S. ShakeOut” earthquake drill will be held at exactly 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, February 7. Over one million people across nine states will participate and learn to DROP to the ground, take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops. Commissioner Chris Nicastro invites schools to participate. There is still time to register!

Free Sports Concussion Seminar for Sports and School Personnel

Coaches and other sports personel, as well as school nurses, physical education teachers and school administrators, are invited to attend a free educational seminar to reduce the risk of long-term effects of head concussions. “Sports Concussions: Facts, Fallacies and New Frontiers” will be held March 1 at St. Louis University. This seminar is being presented by the Brain Injury Association of Missouri and community sponsors.

February is Lifelong Learning Month

Governor Jay Nixon has proclaimed February as Lifelong Learning Month. He encourages appropriate activities in the public schools to promote awareness of the importance of ongoing education throughout each person’s lifetime.

Career and Technical Education Month

February also is Career and Technical Education Month. Missouri Career Education combines academics and occupational skill training to prepare students of all ages. A blend of academics and high-skill occupational training provides students with the knowledge they need to succeed in postsecondary education, the workplace and life.

Missouri’s Poet Laureate

Governor Jay Nixon is seeking applications for the next two-year term as poet laureate of Missouri. The deadline is Feb. 24.
